I am getting ready to paint and varnish my expedition. It will have white hull , with blue stripe along the gunwales and varnished top. the painted areas will have primer . What is the best order for putting the coatings on . I was thinking hull, then stripe then varnish. Should I varnish over stripe? Can I put paint over varnish? Thanks Dennis Winner
Hello Dennis,
Do you plan on bringing the the paint over the sides and onto the deck a bit, or having the line right at the corner/edge of the deck? The latter option is easier. Overall, you can paint over the varnish, but you can't varnish over the paint. Varnishing is a lot more work and more finicky to get perfect compared to paint. I would probably varnish the decks first. After completing the varnishing create a good tape line (using frogline tape) along the edges of the varnish and then proceed with the paint. Do the white hull, and then, finally, after the paint is fully dried, tape the outline of the blue stripe and paint it last.
