Hi Colin,
I have an oak board that is 5 3/4 wide,13/16 thick, and 10 feet long. I would like to make my rigger out of one piece rather than two pieces that are epoxyed together. I plan on fiberglassing the rigger. Do you see a problem with that? PS Thanks for the book
Anthony Flagg
Hi Anthony,
Oak works very well for riggers, and looks good. Cutting a rigger from one piece of wood creates a nice elegant and seamless look, however it requires a very wide piece of wood to achieve the desired overall shape (and creates a lot of wastage). 5 3/4" will not be wide enough to achieve this. You will need a piece of wood about 69" long by 22" wide. Otherwise, it will need to be constructed from two pieces.
@Colin Angus I hesitate to ask this because I feel so dumb with my last question, but here goes. My parts list for the sliding seat include 2 51/2 bolts. My bolts are only 3 1/2 inches. There is not enough length to accomodate the rigger (1 inch) the mounting block supplied with the kit, and the block I made to raise the rigger hieght (just under 2 inches). I thought I read all the material but I must of missed a memo somewhere. what should I do
PS the boat is looking beautiful I will send you pictures when I am done
Hello Anthony - the first question wasn't dumb at all, and we've had builders construct riggers from single piece for an elegant seamless look. With regards to the second question, that's actually a mistake on our part. Depending on the boat and specific mounting system, different lengths of bolt are required. It sounds like you received 3.4" bolts instead of the 4.5" bolts. I'll make sure a new set are sent to you.
