Rigger construction

  • Hi Colin,

I have an oak board that is 5 3/4 wide,13/16 thick, and 10 feet long.  I would like to make my rigger out of one piece rather than two pieces that are epoxyed together.  I plan on fiberglassing the rigger.  Do you see a problem with that?  PS  Thanks for the book

  • Hi Anthony,

Oak works very well for riggers, and looks good.  Cutting a rigger from one piece of wood creates a nice elegant and seamless look, however it requires a very wide piece of wood to achieve the desired overall shape (and creates a lot of wastage).  5 3/4" will not be wide enough to achieve this.  You will need a piece of wood about 69" long by 22" wide.  Otherwise, it will need to be constructed from two pieces.
