Cambridge Racer

  • How do you modify the cambridge racer to be split in two for storage?

  • I haven't done this before, but having talked to builders how have, this is the rough gist of how they achieved it:

The first step is making a copy of the middle bulkhead.  Next, construct the boat as normal to the point of being ready to install the decks.  At this stage, install the second middle bulkhead on the bow side of the installed middle bulkhead with about a quarter inch gap.  Apply fillets on the bow side of the bulkhead.  Next, apply the decks as per normal.

After installing the decks, cut the boat in half betweeen the bulkheads, and then sand the bulkhead ends completely flat. Fill any gaps or cracks with thinkened epoxy and sand again.  Next,  apply a few layers of fiberglass across the ends for additional reinforcing.

You now have two halves that will float independently.  There are a few different ways you can bolt them together.  I won't get into details on that, as there are a few examples online from people who have put some thought into it.   Good luck with that, and I'd love to hear a report on how it goes.
